How to Get a Lower Monthly Rate on Verizon DSL | Renew Verizon DSL the Right Way

Verizon Logo While for the past two years Verizon has charged $29.99 a month for 3.0/768 DSL, Verizon has decided that the $29.99 a month deal is an introductory rate for the first year. When I went to renew the Verizon DSL subscription online Verizon quoted the one year 3.0/768 plan as $33.99 a month instead of the previous $29.99. This ends up being nearly fifty bucks more for the year, with no improvement in service!

Now, the local cable outfit offers 6Mbps/512Kbps service for $30 a month, so I decided to see if the $33.99 rate was correct. When I called up Verizon, and asked them if the $33.99 rate was right, they said it was, and that next year (2008) it will be increasing to $34.99 a month! Since the cable plan is cheaper I just came out and said that I can get the cable company broadband for $30/month, and is Verizon willing to meet that, because otherwise we're switching to cable.

Surprisingly, she instantly accepted and said Verizon would match that rate. However, she didn't lower the monthly rate, but credited our account with the $47.88 difference between them and the competitor. No fuss at all. ( However, she did say that they probably won't match the $30/month rate next year, but I'll wait until then to find out. ) Anyway, we saved nearly $50 with a simple phone call to Verizon's help line, and in hindsight, Verizon might have even matched a lower rate, such as AT&T's 24.95 a month for the same service speed (3Mbps/768Kbps). ( Which we can't get here, but the agent didn't even ask for the cable company's name. )

In conclusion, it's really easy to get a lower rate on Verizon DSL, just give a call to their help line at 1-800-567-6789 ask for billing --> agent, then and hint that you're going to switch to another service because it's priced lower, and they'll match it. If you can get them to match a rate lower than $30/month, send me an email to the address below and I'll add that to this article.
